Violent confrontations with criminal strangers increasingly occur away from the stereotypical late hours of the night in dark alleyways. Instead, these harrowing experiences now unfold in the bright daylight when the good people of the world are going about their business.

Such was the case for a Texas father and son Tuesday afternoon when the family was shocked to find their vehicle being broken into.

The sudden encounter erupted in a San Antonio shopping center parking lot, and the pair quickly found themselves staring down the barrels of firearms wielded by two suspects.

Instead of meekly becoming victims, the father and son immediately drew their own weapons to defend themselves. Witnesses told investigators they heard from eight to ten shots ring out as the gunbattle ensued.

The male suspect, only identified as a 35-year-old, was struck by a bullet in the face. His alleged partner, a female, was also hit by rounds from the father and son, and both managed to flee the scene and seek treatment at a hospital.

Their wounds were described as non-life threatening.

There was no immediate word on charges for the two alleged robbers stemming from the incident, though the woman was arrested on outstanding warrants.

Law-abiding citizens must remember that violent criminals do not just strike in the middle of the night. While it is critical to lock doors and windows and have security precautions in place, these terrifying incidents may also erupt in the middle of the day — far away from security systems and guard dogs.

That’s why Americans increasingly rely on Second Amendment rights such as constitutional carry to ensure their safety and that of their families. When confronted by bad guys intent on causing harm, there is simply no replacement for a legal firearm and the will to defend oneself.

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
