Barbershops are traditional gathering places for men to swap fishing stories and commensurate about the good old days. They are generally not targets for violent criminals, but no establishment is completely safe in 2025.

A disturbing encounter unfolded on Wednesday in San Antonio when a barbershop owner was forced to take lethal action in self-defense.

It was about 7:30 p.m. when police investigators say 50-year-old Victor Cardenas burst into the business brandishing a firearm. The suspect allegedly demanded that workers and clientele hand over wallets and purses.

Cardenas was ready for possible resistance but was not prepared for what followed.

One of the owners, identified only as a 26-year-old man, did not comply quickly enough for the suspect. Cardenas reportedly pistol-whipped him and then threatened a 51-year-old female business owner.

He then pulled out zip ties, signaling his willingness to bind the barbershop’s occupants to get what he wanted. But the male business owner had other ideas and was able to retrieve a firearm.

The courageous man fired multiple shots, striking Cardenas in the chest. First responders attempted to save his life, but he was pronounced dead later at the hospital.

After witnesses described the lethal encounter to police investigators, San Antonio authorities announced that no charges against the business owner would be filed.

There was no questioning the vile intentions of the suspect when he brought a firearm and zip ties into the barbershop to rob the owners and patrons. He set the events that ended his life in motion, and the business owner is blameless.

The shame is that the man who acted in self-defense must deal with knowing that he took a life. What should comfort him is the fact that he very well may have saved himself and others from a similar fate.
