There is a disturbing trend among anti-Second Amendment factions to penalize gun owners financially.

State and local governments run by gun rights opponents increasingly work to add “sin taxes” to owning a firearm. This could elevate the price of exercising a fundamental right out of reach for many Americans, and one lawmaker is fighting back.

U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX) renewed the push to end this insidious practice last week in Congress.

Jackson blasted anti-gun politicians bent on destroying constitutional rights. “The Founding Fathers included the Second Amendment to ensure citizens could defend themselves. That’s why I’m reintroducing the No User Fees for Gun Owners Act.”

The Texas representative added that state and local governments would no longer be permitted to strongarm gun owners “to pay additional insurance or taxes meant to limit gun ownership and make it too costly for the average American to exercise their Second Amendment right.”

His proposal would bar state and local governments from mandating insurance, taxes, user fees, and other obstacles to lawful gun ownership.

A coalition of gun rights organizations is busy fighting California’s controversial 11% excise tax on guns, gun parts, and ammunition. The state tax went into effect last July, and the lawsuit was immediately filed.

In November, voters approved a Colorado measure to establish a tax on weapons and ammunition. This means the sporting public will pay a new 6.5% excise tax on firearms, firearm parts, and ammunition.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) blasted the measure as “nothing more than an attack on the Second Amendment and those who exercise their rights under it.”

The new law is expected to add up to $39 million to the state’s coffers annually. It may be short-lived if one lawmaker is successful.

If it cleared Congress and were signed by the president, Jackson’s proposal would erase the gun taxes in California and Colorado.
