Gun rights advocates have long argued that these fundamental freedoms should not depend on where a law-abiding citizen lives. This is certainly true for the scores of Americans who reside in federally subsidized housing and find themselves unable to enjoy the liberties afforded to all citizens.
Last week, Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-IA) reintroduced the Preserving Rights of Tenants by Ensuring Compliance to the Second Amendment Act (PROTECT).
This proposal would safeguard the gun rights of residents in properties that receive federal funding.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) took a strong stand in favor of this legislation. John Commerford is the Executive Director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA), and he declared that good people should not be forced to hand over their constitutional rights simply for where they live.
“The right of law-abiding Americans to keep firearms in their homes for self-defense has been a fundamental freedom since our nation’s founding and has been reaffirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court,” Commerford said. “No one should be forced to give up this right, especially when a landlord or property manager is receiving federal tax dollars.”
The NRA lauded Feenstra for his championing of the PROTECT Act.
The representative proclaimed he introduced the bill to protect citizens of his home state and gun owners nationwide.
“The right of Iowans to keep and bear arms is enshrined in our Constitution and shall not be infringed,” Feenstra said in a statement. “These constitutional protections must be strongly defended and certainly do not cease to exist for gun owners living in rental properties.”
The bill would protect the rights of tenants to possess weapons, carry them through common areas of their residence, and prohibit restrictions on such activities in federally funded dwellings.
The U.S. House will now consider the bill for possible advancement.
