A child’s birthday celebration should be a time for celebrants to honor the person marking the milestone. And it certainly should not be the venue for violence and gunfire.
That scenario, however, is precisely what exploded in a Houston neighborhood late on Saturday night.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement personnel were called to a residence over reports of gunfire. The party for a three-year-old ended, and several people were congregated outside when violence erupted.
The mother, Regine Murray, told reporters, “We were just outside talking, hanging out. Kids, everybody was out there.”
Investigators believe that 62-year-old James Thompson, a neighbor of the family throwing the celebration, became agitated over a dog and walked over from the house next door.
He shouted at the gathering, and several people responded in kind.
The situation then dramatically worsened. Murray recalled that someone threw a water bottle, and then “things just kind of unraveled really quickly.”
Eyewitnesses told deputies that Thompson brandished a weapon and began shooting at the partygoers, striking the homeowner in the stomach. However, the alleged shooter was not the only person present who was armed.
Multiple attendees reportedly opened fire on Thompson, and he was struck by more than one bullet.
The suspect and the homeowner, identified as Murray’s boyfriend, were transported to area hospitals, where they were listed in fair condition. Both are expected to survive their injuries, though the boyfriend underwent two surgeries.
Thompson faces a lengthy legal process when he recovers. He is charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and another charge of Tampering with Evidence.
Local media reports cite several prior instances where the suspect was accused of harassing neighbors. Court documents revealed that he once threatened to shoot Murray in the head.
