For most Americans, Black Friday is a day to recover from Thanksgiving overeating and perhaps brave the crowds in malls and shopping centers looking for bargains.
It is not generally a day for violent encounters, but that’s precisely what unfolded for one California man. An alleged burglar was shot, and the homeowner lived to tell the tale.
The Sacramento homeowner was startled Friday afternoon when he encountered an alleged intruder attempting to break a window and enter his residence. This terrifying scenario began around 3:00 p.m., far from the middle of the night when these incidents are most expected.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, 40-year-old Emelio Correa tried to gain entry to the house by breaking a window. The homeowner, who was present with his family, yelled several warnings to the alleged intruder.
However, Correa reportedly continued to attempt to get inside.
This left the unidentified homeowner with no choice but to react. He fired a single shot from inside the residence, striking the suspect in the hand.
Investigators believe Correa then fled to another home where no one was present. He then allegedly forced his way inside and found the keys to a vehicle in the garage.
Deputies reported that Correa drove the vehicle through the garage door and attempted his getaway.
Officers spotted the suspect and a “lengthy vehicle pursuit” ensued. After about an hour, authorities used a PIT maneuver to end the chase, and the suspect was arrested.
Correa was treated for his injury and now faces numerous felony charges related to the attempted break-in. Bail was set at $100,000.
To be sure, the holidays are meant to be spent with family and loved ones and certainly are not for fighting off violent strangers attempting to break into homes. But there is no holiday from the need to be prepared, and the California homeowner was fortunate to have a ready firearm to protect his family and ensure a happy season.
