A frightening home invasion in California last week turned deadly for one suspect and left two others hospitalized.
It was approximately 9:18 p.m. Tuesday when a Grand Terrace homeowner found himself face to face with a group of alleged attackers. The unidentified intended victim told investigators that several suspects forced their way into his residence.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department released a statement explaining what ensued after the man secured a weapon.
“In fear for his safety and in self-defense, the victim fired rounds at the suspects and the suspects fled the location in a white sedan,” the pronouncement read.
Law enforcement officials found one wounded suspect outside of a gas station lying on the ground along with a 15-year-old male. The man who had been shot was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities determined both males were part of the attempted home invasion, though it is unclear if the teenager was also wounded. He faces multiple charges and is being held in Juvenile Hall.
Less than an hour later, another report came from a different hospital where a man was being treated for a gunshot wound. Investigators identified this suspect as 27-year-old Marquez Jackson of San Bernardino.
Jackson underwent surgery for his injuries. Officials reportedly expect to charge him with murder and robbery.
A fourth suspect is still being sought.
The family of the man who defended his home told local media that the scary encounter is “a sobering reminder that crime can happen anytime.”
They added that despite needing to feel safe at home, the experience destroyed their “sense of security.”
Anyone who has been a crime victim can sympathize with the family’s plight. Still, they were very fortunate that the homeowner had a firearm readily available and did not hesitate to defend what was most important to him.
This near tragedy in California is yet another victory for the Second Amendment.
