As if California gun owners do not already deal with an insane amount of oppressive laws and regulations from the state, now comes another ridiculous proposal seeking to strip away self-defense rights.

State Rep. Rick Chavez Zbur (D) recently introduced Assembly Bill 1333. The measure’s synopsis clearly outlines its attack on the right of people to defend themselves and their loved ones.

It reads, “This bill would eliminate certain circumstances under which homicide is justifiable, including, among others, in defense of a habitation or property.”

In other words, the good people would be denied their right to armed self-defense when someone breaks into their home and threatens them.

The controversial measure has a “duty to retreat” built in. This applies to situations when a person “was outside of their residence and knew that using force likely to cause death or great bodily injury could have been avoided with complete safety by retreating.”

So, you and your family should attempt to run away.

Even more shocking are provisions to provide a “get out of jail” card to those who instigate violence. Criminals could justify their acts as long as they “reasonably believed” they could be met with lethal force from the person they attacked. Incredible.

Everytown for Gun Safety’s Monisha Henley offered a novel defense for lawmakers seeking to disarm crime victims.

“White supremacists and other extremists have hidden behind self-defense laws to fire a gun and turn any conflict into a death sentence,” she claimed.

First of all, this statement is nothing more than a brazen attempt to equate tens of millions of law-abiding citizens with criminals. No one “hides” behind self-defense laws—they are fundamental to American freedoms.

And Henley tried to magically transform a violent criminal attack into a mere “conflict,” as if two people had a disagreement on the street corner.

Riverside County Sheriff and gubernatorial candidate Chad Bianco vehemently disagrees. Along with attacking law enforcement and “coddling criminals,” Bianco charged that lawmakers are “actively trying to tie the hands of residents who have had to defend themselves against re-released criminals far too often.”
