California lawmakers harbor a profound hatred for the Second Amendment, and they lead the nation in the unimpressive category of suppressing gun rights.

The latest assault on freedom may seem relatively mild by comparison, but it is just another rung in the ladder to universal gun registration and, ultimately, confiscation.

As of January 1, the Golden State’s law-abiding gun retailers are now forced to warn their customers about the alleged potential dangers of exercising their constitutional rights.

That’s right, the state with the most stringent gun control statutes on the books requires licensed firearm dealers to tell their clientele that guns may be harmful.

Is the same requirement in place for automobile dealerships or fast-food outlets?

Among the cautions to be handed out is that possessing a weapon “[increases] risk of death in the household by suicide, homicide, or unintentional injury.”

In a state that coddles violent criminals, customers should also be notified that gun ownership and proper preparedness dramatically enhance a person’s chances of successfully defending themselves from attacks.

California already has numerous onerous restrictions, including a ban on popular sporting rifles and standard capacity magazines, firearm registration requirements, so-called “red flag” laws, restrictions on the issuance of carry permits, a background check mandate simply for purchasing ammunition, and other infringements.

New Year’s Day brought another new law that solidified restrictions on the number of weapons that can be purchased. Existing state law limits citizens to only one handgun bought per month, and now that statute covers “private party transactions” as well.

What California’s good citizens need more than anything is commonsense statutes that crack down on criminals and keep violent perpetrators off the streets.

Disarming the law-abiding population does nothing for public safety except make the people more vulnerable to those who would prey on the innocent.
