From the criminal point of view, choosing the right target is of utmost importance and could be the difference between a successful heist and one that does not end well for the perpetrator.

An 18-year-old in Washington, D.C., apparently missed that memo when he allegedly attempted to carjack a vehicle parked outside of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s residence.

It was the Friday immediately following the impressive Independence Day celebrations in the nation’s capital when 18-year-old Kentrell Flowers allegedly approached a vehicle parked in northwest D.C.

It was approximately 1:15 a.m. when the violent encounter unfolded.

The Marshals Service told the New York Post that Flowers walked up to a car with two Secret Service agents parked outside of the home and brandished a weapon.

The Southeast D.C. resident was immediately shot as both federal agents opened fire, and the alleged assailant is expected to survive his wounds.

Sotomayor was not home when the incident exploded.

The Marshals office released a statement confirming the confrontation. “The Deputy U.S. Marshals involved in the shooting incident were part of the unit protecting the residences of U.S. Supreme Court justices.”

Flowers was charged with armed carjacking, carrying a pistol without a license and possession of a large-capacity magazine.

There have been multiple recent instances of federal workers becoming involved in violent exchanges in the nation’s capital. In 2023, Secret Service agents assigned to protect President Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi, fired on a group of suspects allegedly attempting to break into an unmarked government vehicle.

Then, in January, a former Trump administration official was fatally wounded by a carjacker. Mike Gill was sitting in his vehicle in the middle of the afternoon when he was shot and killed.

All of these incidents occurred in heavily gun-controlled Washington, D.C.
