A Chicago garbage collector is fortunate to be alive today after a frightening encounter early Friday morning with two alleged armed robbers. He has his concealed carry license and his situational awareness to thank for emerging unscathed.
The legally armed 28-year-old sanitation worker was simply doing his job outside of an elementary school at roughly 5 a.m. when he was accosted.
Local media reported that the two suspects approached their intended target and brandished a weapon. They then asked for his possessions, but they received something unexpected.
The would-be victim, who also holds a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card, was ready. He immediately exchanged gunfire with his alleged assailants, striking both.
One of the suspects, only identified as a 42-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering a gunshot wound to the head. He was found about 20 feet from the school’s front door.
Investigators later confirmed the deceased had a lengthy criminal history that included an armed robbery conviction in 2008. That incident occurred just blocks away from where he died.
The second, a 20-year-old male, was struck in the neck by a bullet from the defender and is in critical condition at Mount Siani Hospital at the last report.
The garbage collector was transported to St. Anthony Hospital to be checked out and was reported to be in good condition. Two firearms and seven shell casings were recovered at the scene by law enforcement.
The obvious question is why someone would want to rob a garbage collector at 5 a.m. As professions go, that seems to be one of the least likely to be targeted by violent criminals, but that’s the world we live in.
Even with his apparently safe occupation, the worker was wise to be armed and ready to defend himself. No location and no line of work are immune to attacks by evildoers, and the Chicago man is thankful today for the Second Amendment and his preparedness.
