A mysterious incident in Carthage, North Carolina, involving the use of a firearm to protect the shooter’s family unfolded three weeks ago but is just now being revealed.

A U.S. Army Colonel confronted what authorities described as a Chechen intruder on his property near Fort Liberty, formerly Fort Bragg, as he was allegedly taking pictures of the officer’s children.

The unidentified Colonel shot and killed the intruder.

Two men identified as Chechen contractors and speaking broken English reportedly were found near the residence. One, identified as 35-year-old Ramzan Daraev of Chicago, is believed to have been taking photographs of the minors.

The Colonel intervened and the two men reportedly skirmished. Daraev was hit by multiple rounds, as Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Shield explained to the media.

“The caller indicated that an individual was observed taking photographs on the property and had become aggressive towards a resident outside their home…The deceased was found approximately 250 yards from the roadway.”

Shield further noted that identification was not found on the dead man’s body, but investigators located family members through an international ID that was in his vehicle.

An interpreter was used to translate the interview with the second Chechen, identified as Dzhankutov Adsalan. He was subsequently released by the authorities.

Though both were reportedly subcontractors for Utilities One, neither possessed identification, utility equipment or clothing when the encounter took place. Both had cell phones with contacts in Russian as well as cameras.

Fox News reported sources revealed that electrical utility work is often used as a cover by U.S. intelligence operations in other countries.

No matter the bizarre circumstances surrounding the violent encounter, the Army Colonel acted to protect his family. The region surrounding Fort Liberty is a sensitive area, and investigators are working to determine whether the incident concerned national security or criminal activity.
