Make no mistake. One of the myriad of ways that anti-gunners are going after the people’s Second Amendment rights is through attacks on sporting traditions such as hunting.
Multiple states are seeing efforts by activists against this time-honored practice, including Colorado. But thanks to an overwhelming vote by the House Agriculture, Water & Natural Resources Committee last week, that push is sidelined for the current session.
And it all came down to one word.
Colorado’s wildlife statute governing management of these valuable resources reads, “The state shall utilize hunting, trapping, and fishing as the primary methods of effecting necessary wildlife harvest.”
The effect is evident. Under this law, traditional and natural means of managing game and fish will be protected.
And by doing this, outdoor sporting traditions passed down for innumerable generations are preserved. But anti-gun proponents asked for a subtle but profound change.
“Shall” would be replaced by “may.”
In other words, HB25-1258 would have abandoned hunting, trapping, and fishing in favor of new “scientific” methods that would replace sporting traditions. The seasonal culling of wildlife and fish populations that prevent overpopulation and the spread of disease would fall out of favor, and direct state management would be substituted for these practices.
Thursday’s contentious hearing heard almost four hours of testimony from supporters and opponents of the measure. Ultimately, the bill was overwhelmingly defeated with a 12-3 vote, effectively killing it for this legislative session.
Supporters claimed the proposal would modernize outdoor officials’ practices. Opponents, however, warned that its passage would create an opening for eradicating hunting, trapping, and fishing altogether in the name of “science.”
Last week’s victory followed a similar triumph in 2024 when Proposition 127 was defeated. That would have prohibited hunting mountain lions, bobcats, and lynx.
Opponents also successfully argued in this case that the measure was a giant step toward eliminating outdoor sports as wildlife management tools.
