Law enforcement officials on the front lines of Colorado’s battle with violent crime are not happy with the state’s most recent gun control measures.

Gov. Jared Polis (D) signed the legislation last week without fanfare and behind closed doors. The new law’s impact, which will erect hurdles between law-abiding citizens and the ownership of popular sporting rifles, is hardly a secret.

Upon the law taking effect next year, citizens must pass two background checks, get permission from their local sheriff’s department, and complete a firearms training course before purchasing semi-automatic weapons. The measure also bans rapid-fire conversion devices such as bump stocks.

El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal blasted SB 25-003 as “the most atrocious anti-Second Amendment bill in Colorado history.”

In a release, the official noted that many of his colleagues stood against the controversial measure. “Public safety experts across the state opposed this legislation, as it will be burdensome on law-abiding citizens, and have no adverse effect on criminals.”

Roybal added, “It is clear those who hold the power in our state legislature are more interested in carrying out a political agenda rather than sponsoring and voting for legislation which enhances public safety and preserves the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens.”

Another law enforcement leader, Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell, was angered to the point of releasing a video statement condemning SB 25-003.

In it, Mikesell accused the majority of lawmakers of passing the “most restrictive gun rights bill in the United States’ history.”

Legislators who opposed the anti-Second Amendment measure and the National Rifle Association (NRA) added their voices to the chorus of derision.

Executive Director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action John Commerford summed up his organization’s displeasure with the latest infringement on the right to keep and bear arms.

“Behind closed doors, Governor Polis cowardly signed into law the most anti-gun, anti-freedom bill in Colorado’s history,” Commerford stated. “Instead of respecting the individual liberties of gun owners and hunters in his state, he bent the knee to the radical gun control element of his party.”
