Three Michigan apartment dwellers found themselves in a horrifying situation last weekend that resulted in two residents and a suspect being wounded by gunfire.

The good news is that the residents, one of whom was thankfully armed, are expected to recover while their assailants face lengthy jail terms.

Local media reported that 24-year-old Benjamin Nevers and his girlfriend were asleep in their Dearborn Heights residence early in the morning when they were startled by the sound of glass breaking in their kitchen. A quick check of the apartment’s security cameras revealed two strangers milling about.

The newcomers first encountered Nevers’ roommate and held him at gunpoint in the living room.

Meanwhile, Nevers grabbed his loaded firearm and waited along with his girlfriend behind their bedroom door for the alleged intruders to appear.

He told reporters, “I was just quick enough to react to grab my gun and cock it, and I just sat there and kind of waited. I knew they were going to come to my room.”

It did not take long. 

Nevers recalled, “He [saw] that I had the gun like this, and he shot me—shot me in the foot first, and as soon as he shot, I shot back. So, I shot twice, and I know I hit him in the leg.”

The police identified the intruder who was struck as Phillip Price. Nevers and his girlfriend were also wounded, and she remained in the hospital at last report with a gunshot injury to the back. 

He faces reconstructive surgery on his foot, while his girlfriend has a bullet lodged in her chest that doctors are reluctant to remove.

The wounded Price was arrested and hit with 21 charges, including assault with intent to murder and armed robbery. There is no word if the second suspect was immediately apprehended.

Regrettably, Nevers and his girlfriend were both struck by gunfire, but the violent home invasion left them little choice but to defend themselves or be helpless victims. Without a ready firearm, the early morning showdown could have been truly tragic.
