Anyone involved in a self-defense shooting must be concerned about legal blowback, especially in some parts of the country.

An Indiana man found himself allegedly threatened by a coworker at the Amazon Distribution Warehouse in Greenfield the week before Christmas, and he felt he had no choice but to fire his weapon to protect himself. Fortunately for him, investigators are not recommending that charges be filed.

According to Prosecutor Brent Eaton, the two men in the conflict did not know each other. He told the Daily Reporter that there was contact between the two just before the shooting.

The deceased man, identified as 39-year-old Isaac Riley, reportedly confronted the other individual inside the building and threatened physical violence.

Seeking to avoid confrontation, the man removed himself from the situation and went outside to wait for a ride.

Investigators believe this was not enough for Riley, who allegedly followed the other man to the parking lot. Witnesses reported that the deceased “made additional aggressive remarks and furtive movements while closing in on the shooter in an aggressive manner.”

Fearing for his life, the man drew a weapon and fired. First responders pronounced Riley dead at the scene.

Eaton declared to local media that charges are not likely to be forthcoming. “At this time, the evidence does not give us a crime that can be successfully prosecuted.”

The plant temporarily closed after the deadly encounter.

Indiana is a state with solid Second Amendment credentials, and the man who defended himself will probably not face legal consequences. The death was tragic but wholly avoidable.

By all accounts, the shooter attempted to de-escalate the situation and left after being threatened. When he was followed outside and faced possible violence, it appears unlikely that he had any other recourse but to defend himself with force.

This scenario is being played out nationwide as law-abiding citizens arm themselves for protection. It should serve as a warning to defuse a confrontation whenever possible to avoid potentially deadly violence.
