Man’s best friend often times is a powerful weapon against those who would prey on law-abiding citizens. The presence of a canine partner may scare away an intruder before they even attack, and the dog’s barking can alert the homeowner to the presence of danger.

Such was apparently the case in Paris, Texas, early Thursday morning when a resident was jolted from their sleep in one of the worst possible ways.

The sound of the dog barking awakened the homeowner, and promptly got up to investigate the cause of the commotion. What they found was startling.

An intruder had forced their way into the home and was now in the kitchen.

The homeowner was prepared, not only by having the dog but by being armed. They fired a single shot with a handgun, and the intruder promptly fled the scene in fear.

No one was injured in the frightening incident, and the manhunt for the suspect continues. No reports of a description of the suspect being released have been made.

The Second Amendment exists to uphold the rights of hunters and sportsmen and all those who enjoy the fine tradition of marksmanship. But its significance goes much deeper than simply the pleasure of participating in a hallowed pastime.

There is a fundamental need to protect oneself from imminent danger, and the Bill of Rights wisely and specifically established this freedom, which continues today.

The Texas resident was not fortunate, instead, they were armed and prepared. Having a dog to alert them to the immediate danger was a great first level of defense, and the presence of a readily available firearm defused a situation that may have ended much differently otherwise.

That is the fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution and defended every day by supporters of protecting our basic freedoms.
