In previous years, the federal government could be counted on to bring the hammer down on Second Amendment rights. Critics charged that agencies such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were weaponized against firearm dealers and the shooting public.
But there are changes in the wind, and more actions to reverse course and protect gun rights have been announced.
Attorney General Pam Bondi revealed on Thursday that a new investigation will dig into charges long leveled against one of the nation’s largest law enforcement agencies.
Gun enthusiasts believe they have systematically been denied their constitutional rights as a matter of policy in the nation’s second-largest city.
A DOJ press release revealed the action. “As part of a broader review of restrictive firearms-related laws in California and other states, the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division today announced an investigation into the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to determine whether it is engaging in a pattern or practice of depriving ordinary, law-abiding Californians of their Second Amendment rights.”
The LASD is accused of taking as long as 18 months to process applications for a concealed carry handgun license.
In 2023, a federal judge responded to a lawsuit against the department by granting injunctive relief to the plaintiffs. The litigants challenged the practice of extended delays in handling licensing applications
Bondi and a host of gun rights advocates believe the department is “slow walking” applications in an effort to discourage citizens from exercising their right to keep and bear arms.
The AG vowed to ensure that these liberties are protected.
“This Department of Justice will not stand idly by while States and localities infringe on the Second Amendment rights of ordinary, law-abiding citizens,” Bondi declared. “The Second Amendment is not a second-class right, and under my watch, the Department will actively enforce the Second Amendment just like it actively enforces other fundamental constitutional rights.”
These civil rights investigations can take months or even years to complete.
