Change is inevitable, and sometimes that change cannot come a moment too soon.
That is the case with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which was strongly criticized in recent years for trampling on gun owners’ rights and the Second Amendment.
The beleaguered agency confirmed last week that Director Steven Dettelbach will resign just two days before the new administration takes over in Washington, D.C. later this month. The Reload confirmed that the head man will step down.
It is hardly a surprise since President-elect Donald Trump promised to fire him on day one.
The ATF Chief of Public Affairs, Kristina Mastropasqua, told the gun rights outlet that Dettelbach’s resignation is standard procedure when a new president is to be inaugurated.
“As is typical in a transition, and consistent with the memorandum sent to all presidential appointees on Dec. 19, Director Dettelbach has rendered his resignation to President Biden effective January 18, 2025,” Mastropasqua reported. “Leading the courageous and incredible men and women of ATF has been the greatest honor of his professional life.”
Concerns among gun rights advocacy organizations quickly arose when Dettelbach could not answer basic questions about firearms after his nomination in 2022.
Many suspected that he was simply a figurehead for the current administration to use to push through anti-gun measures that failed in Congress.
Though he lauded his personal accomplishments, Dettelbach faced intense criticism from those in the industry.
Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms chairman Alan Gottlieb torched the outgoing director in a statement. After noting he jumped before his inevitable push, Gottlieb described Dettelbach as “one less gun prohibition lobbyist on the government payroll.”
The incoming administration must nominate a new director, and they will face the Senate confirmation process before taking office. It is reasonable to expect a more industry-friendly leader of the ATF to emerge, and Second Amendment rights should command more respect.
