For all the states such as California, New York, and Illinois that stand out in the race to the bottom in defending Second Amendment rights, there are those wannabes who are desperate to catch up.
New Mexico is high on that ignoble second list, though there may be changes in the wind.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) made great hay in 2023 out of her anti-gun stance and quickly crossed a constitutional line. In a move touted as fighting against the state’s scourge of violent crime, the governor unilaterally banned concealed carry for self-defense—even for valid permit holders—in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.
The outcry was spontaneous, even among her party colleagues. Several lawsuits were filed, and law enforcement agencies vowed not to arrest anyone for this arbitrary infraction.
Grisham had no choice but to quickly retreat from her hasty decision.
What a difference a year and a half made.
The embattled governor gave a noteworthy State of the State address to her New Mexico constituents last week, which was remarkable both for what it included and for what it did not.
This message came against the backdrop of her state having a violent crime rate twice the national average and 21% higher than it was just a decade ago.
Grisham told voters that issues such as mental health, addiction, poverty, and homelessness contributed to the startling numbers.
This came as legislators proposed a $1 billion trust to combat addiction and provide mental health treatments. The governor then changed course by advocating holding people believed to be dangerous behind bars until their trials and targeting repeat offenders.
Noble goals. And notably absent from Grisham’s speech was another round of gun control proposals doomed to fail yet again. Nowhere did she blame law-abiding gun owners for the despicable acts of violent criminals.
And that is a sure sign of progress.
