The last four years saw an unprecedented effort by politicians and bureaucrats to criminalize perfectly legal weapons. The previous administration and the ATF recategorized pistols equipped with braces as short-barreled rifles (SBRs), meaning they fell under the auspices of the National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934.

This legally made them machine guns, which are virtually prohibited by law.

Now, a U.S. Senator and Representative are spearheading companion bills to end this injustice. Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) and Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) introduced versions of the Stop Harassing Owners of Rifles Today (SHORT) Act in their respective chambers.

The measure reads that in the case of SBRs, which state or local law requires registration, “Any person who acquires or possesses such rifle, shotgun, or any other weapon in accordance with Chapter 44 of title 18, United States Code, shall be treated as meeting any such registration or licensing requirement with respect to such rifle, shotgun, or other weapon.”

In other words, mandates to register or pay taxes on these firearms will disappear.

Clyde’s congressional office released a statement summarizing the goals of the SHORT Act. “Deregulating SBRs, SBSs (Short-Barreled Shotguns), and AOWs (Any Other Weapons) is the most effective way to ensure American gun owners are not subjected to unlawful and unnecessary restrictions, taxation, and registration of firearms or pistol braces.”

Second Amendment advocacy group Gun Owners of America (GOA) voiced its strong support for the measure.

Aidan Johnson, the GOA director of federal affairs, noted that the present law does nothing but infringe on the rights of millions of lawful firearm owners.

“The Stop Harassing Owners of Rifles Today Act will repeal elements of the archaic National Firearms Act,” Johnson declared before adding that these restrictions should not be “weaponized against the American people.”
