The Second Amendment exists for a wide variety of reasons. At or near the top of the list is the fundamental right for upstanding citizens to defend themselves from violent criminals.
These situations include the frightening robberies and carjackings that may occur at any time of the day, as well as the terrifying prospect of having an intruder break into your home in the dead of night.
An Albuquerque homeowner faced the latter early Tuesday morning and lived to see the sunrise. The same cannot be said for the suspect.
Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene after a homeowner reported an attempted break-in just before 4 a.m. The defender fired at least one shot and struck the suspect before calling 911.
Responding officers discovered a female suspect in critical condition when they arrived. They rendered first aid in an attempt to save her life, but it was to no avail.
She was taken by ambulance to the University of New Mexico Hospital but succumbed to her injuries. The BCSO violent crimes division and homicide detectives are working to unravel the details of the fatal encounter.
The homeowner was likely asleep before being startled awake by the intrusion. No loss of life is celebrated, and the death of the female suspect is undoubtedly a tragedy for her family and loved ones, but the facts of the case speak for themselves.
When a criminal decides to break into a home, rob an innocent person or commit a carjacking, they also choose to take their life into their hands. Whatever the goal, to them, it is worth the risk.
As more Americans are armed and prepared for such encounters, the outcomes are increasingly adverse for the perpetrators. And there is no one to blame but themselves.
