It pays to be prepared, no matter how unlikely a violent encounter may appear. A Florida fire investigator learned this lesson Friday morning while on the scene of a blaze.
Just before 6 a.m., Hillsborough County Fire Rescue crews were called to fight fires at two mobile homes. Ahead of the firefighters came an investigator who happened to be nearby to assess the incident.
For reasons unknown, the official quickly ran into trouble.
The investigator was allegedly confronted and threatened by an unidentified individual at the scene, and the escalating situation meant that firefighters did not immediately address the blaze due to the alleged attacker.
The fire official was armed with his service weapon, and he perceived enough of a threat to where he produced his firearm and held the suspect at bay. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies rushed to the scene and took the individual into custody.
What motivated the suspect is unclear, and charges have not been announced.
The investigator’s weapon resolved the threatening situation, and his quick action and the arrival of law enforcement meant that first responders were able to extinguish the fires.
No injuries were reported, and the cause of the two blazes is under investigation.
There are situations where the value of being armed is obvious, and there are others where this level of preparedness may appear to some to be overkill. There was no reason to believe the Florida fire investigator would face a violent threat while doing his job.
But he did, and that’s where the importance of having a firearm was demonstrated yet again.
Public servants can quickly become targets of violent criminals, and in this case, it was the presence of a ready weapon that likely prevented injuries or worse. These are the true life stories that need to be told and retold.
