Florida gun enthusiasts have a tax holiday on the horizon if Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) gets his way. Even as some governments attempt to fill their coffers with new taxes on weapons and ammunition, the Sunshine State is headed in the opposite direction.
DeSantis proposed a “Second Amendment Summer,” which would eliminate state sales taxes on firearm and ammo purchases along with weapon accessories from Memorial Day through July 4th.
This provision was included in the governor’s new budget, released on the last day of January. His office cited statistics that show consumers would save as much as $8 million while taking advantage of the sales tax holiday.
Camouflage apparel, unfortunately, is not included in “accessories,” but optics, cleaning kits, holsters, grips, and stocks are.
When questioned about his motivation, the one-time presidential candidate said he believed the public would respond enthusiastically to a sales tax holiday for Second Amendment advocates.
“I think this is going to be wildly popular,” DeSantis declared. “Why would they want to fight back on that? This is something their voters would expect them to support.”
One firearm retailer, Brian Devito of The Tactical Store in Fort Pierce, told local media that summertime is generally a slow period for firearm sales. That could change with the Second Amendment Summer, and Devito expressed his approval for anything that would boost his store’s traffic.
Firearm prices are generally stable and without significant markup, so this would be a unique opportunity for the sporting public to save money.
Of course, since it involves the right to keep and bear arms, there is already resistance from predictable quarters. The League of Women voters urged a sales tax holiday on gun safes and locks instead of firearms and ammunition.
This even though all new guns sold through federal firearm licensees are delivered with a shiny new trigger lock.
