If someone breaks into another person’s home, they admit that they value that person’s property more than their own life.
Tragically, that truism was proven yet again early Friday morning in Bradenton, Florida. Two alleged intruders were caught in the act of illegally entering a home, and one paid the ultimate price.
The sheriff’s office reported that two masked men were detected on the homeowner’s security camera forcing their way into the back of the residence at around 9 p.m. The resident was armed and prepared and was able to turn the tables on his alleged attackers.
The man fired several shots from his 9mm handgun, striking one of the intruders multiple times while the other fled for his life. The injured suspect was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
He died later Friday morning.
Responding officers used K-9 units to track the second suspect, who was located about four blocks from the home. He was later identified as 39-year-old Michel Soto-Mella.
Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells noted that the surviving suspect had overstayed a 90-day immigration visa. The law enforcement officer delivered harsh words to anyone who would invade another person’s home in the Sunshine State.
“This is the state of Florida,” Wells declared. “If you want to break into someone’s home, you should expect to be shot.”
The sheriff added that he “praised this husband for doing what he needed to do to protect his family.”
No one celebrates a death, but the fatally wounded suspect should have known better. There is nowhere in the U.S. where a violent criminal may assume they will not encounter armed resistance, but Florida is well known to stand for law-abiding citizens and honor their Second Amendment right to self-defense.
Lethal if necessary.
