The Age 21 Act is before the U.S. Senate, proving there are no breaks for Second Amendment advocates. This misguided proposal would establish a nationwide prohibition on young adults purchasing popular semi-automatic sporting rifles and standard capacity magazines.

This tired proposal is the subject of multiple battles at the state level, and former vice-presidential candidate and current Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) wants the ban to be the law of the land.

Never mind that 18-20-year-olds defend the nation with arms in the military, marry, vote, serve on juries, and countless other adult responsibilities. And ignore that no other right explicitly granted in the Constitution to law-abiding citizens features age restrictions.

Only the Second Amendment, according to some legislators.

Kaine, who ran on the Democratic presidential ticket in 2016, predictably blamed firearms and not violent criminals for their acts. “One of the many common-sense steps we can take to reduce that risk is limiting young people’s access to assault weapons—just like we already limit their access to handguns.”

That particular prohibition also faces an uncertain future.

Late last month, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) reintroduced the Second Amendment for Every Registerable (SAFER) Voter Act. This would lower the minimum age to purchase a handgun from a federal firearm licensee from 21 to 18.

The proposed ban on young adults purchasing semi-automatic rifles faces an uphill battle in 2025 Washington, D.C. The recent changing of the guard means there are more reliable Second Amendment advocates in Congress than in recent years.

Still, anti-gunners do not rest in their efforts to prohibit common firearms.

Kaine recently claimed that so-called “assault weapons” exist for only one reason, and that is “hunting people.” This ignores the countless instances in which they are critical for self-defense and the millions who enjoy sport shooting.

Of course, anti-gunners attempt to smear these Modern Sporting Rifles as “assault weapons” to make their case against legal ownership. Much of their opposition to these firearms comes simply from their appearance.

The usual list of gun control suspects is backing the measure.
