Random attacks on the elderly appear to be a more common occurrence recently. It is difficult to imagine anything more evil and cowardly than assaulting an elderly person or a child, and it is gratifying to know that someone stood up for a victim.

The latest incident occurred at a Texas barbecue restaurant last week just after noon at Woody’s Smokehouse in Centerville. Thankfully there was an  armed customer exercising his rights as a concealed carry permit holder.

According to reports from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), Kevin Craig Anderson entered the restaurant and began acting in an aggressive manner towards the patrons. Investigators reported Anderson is from Houston, which is roughly 115 miles away.

The erratic behavior apparently continued when Anderson entered the restroom and encountered an elderly man.

LSCO said that the suspect struck the older man and knocked him to the floor unconscious. Investigators said Anderson “continued assaulting him.” That was when a good guy with a gun intervened.

Another customer entered the restroom and tried to stop the vicious attack. He was allegedly also assaulted by Anderson and knocked to the floor. This customer, however, was legally armed and produced his weapon and fired.

He struck Anderson in the arm.

The suspect then reportedly ran outside and drove away. Officers found him later pulled off beside a nearby road, and he was transported to a hospital by helicopter to be treated for the gunshot wound.

The case is reportedly under investigation by local officials and the Texas Rangers.

What is clear is that there is no excuse for attacking an elderly person. It is refreshing that someone happened to be there to intervene and even better that they were armed. As currently understood, there is virtually no chance that an armed defender in Texas will face charges for coming to the aid of an assault victim.

That is an act worthy of praise and yet another testimony to the power of the Second Amendment.
