Sometimes, having a legal firearm is life-saving for the individual owner or their family, and other times, a random acquaintance or even a stranger benefits from a person exercising their Second Amendment rights.
The latter was the case last Friday morning in Summerville, South Carolina.
A homeowner was undoubtedly startled when a female neighbor and her child fled to his residence just before 9:00 a.m. to escape a burglar. At about that time, the Summerville Police Department reported receiving a call about a stranger breaking into the subdivision residence.
The woman grabbed her child and ran, but the suspect pursued her to the neighbor’s home. This was an unmistakable escalation of an already tense situation, and the mother rightfully feared for her life and that of her child.
At the neighbor’s home, the intruder allegedly attempted to use a “burglary tool” to gain entry.
Despite the mid-morning hour, the neighbor thankfully was prepared to resist violence with force—lethal if necessary.
The man who was suddenly thrust into the role of a defender fired at the suspect, and police reported the man was struck in an extremity. The suspect then attempted to run from the scene but was apprehended nearby by responding officers.
His wound was later described as non-life-threatening, and he was treated at a local hospital. From there, he was booked into the Berkeley County Detention Center on two counts of attempted burglary and possession of burglary tools.
No other injuries were reported during the frightening encounter. Police investigators quickly determined that the good neighbor was wholly justified in defending the woman and her child, and no charges are expected.
Authorities told reporters that “the homeowner shot the suspect in an extremity, as he was in fear for his life and the neighbor’s safety, and he was protecting his home.
This was a good result overall. Not only did the intended victim successfully flee with her child from the suspect, but the neighbor also exercised his Second Amendment rights to ensure that no innocent parties were harmed.
Every such encounter should have a similar happy ending.
