Canada’s anti-gun extremists are at it again.

America’s northern neighbor announced on Thursday that it is banning 324 semi-automatic weapons in its ongoing push to disarm its citizens. And officials are working to send guns to Ukraine for the war effort there.

Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced the new restrictions and a package of measures designed to enhance border security. The government intends to crack down on gun trafficking and smuggling from the U.S. as well as toughen punishments for those who violate its draconian firearm laws.

The new laws went into effect immediately, and LeBlanc declared that “these firearms can no longer be used.”

This latest development is a continuation of a lengthy program of suppressing gun rights for Canadians. In May 2020, the government issued a list of 1,500 makes and models of firearms that were no longer accessible to the public.

And just last month, another 500 new models were identified for banishment.

Opposition Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre called the announcement a “stunt” that is nothing more than an attack on “licensed and law-abiding hunters and sport shooters.”

Government officials trotted out the old argument that “battlefield” weapons do not belong on the streets. Never mind that the AR-15 and a host of similar models are merely designed to look like these fully automatic firearms and do not function in the same manner.

These popular weapons, authorities claimed, do not belong in the possession of sport shooters or hunters.

Defense Minister Bill Blair declared that Ukrainian officials were interested in receiving some of the firearms for use in their war with Russia.

Meanwhile, authorities said they are working with law enforcement and local authorities to organize a buyback of these now-prohibited weapons. A buyback plan already in place has been much delayed and criticized for poor planning and cost overruns.
