Changes are certainly underway at the embattled Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) after four years of controversy and overreach.
While the sometimes rogue agency is getting a much-needed overhaul, FBI Director and strong Second Amendment advocate Kash Patel handles duties as the Acting ATF chief. And some are not happy about this.
A predictable group of 14 anti-gun House lawmakers penned a letter to the White House complaining about Patel’s oversight and misrepresenting the nation’s violent crime situation.
They asserted that “violent crime hit an almost 50-year low, and we’ve seen the single largest homicide rate drop in recent history.”
Of course, the devil is in the details. The lawmakers failed to note the dramatic surge in violence during the social unrest of 2020 and beyond and the following drop when law and order were somewhat destroyed.
According to the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), their facts do not stand up to scrutiny. For example, the much-ballyhooed 1.7% dip in violent crime reported from 2021 to 2022 was “quietly adjusted” to a starting 4.5% increase.
CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb noted that critics are worried that Patel will investigate specific actions by the ATF against constitutional rights.
He referenced the “Operation Fast and Furious” debacle and the pattern of “canceling federal firearm licenses because a small dealer might make a technical paperwork error.”
The lawmakers attempted to paint Patel as unqualified, even as the FBI continues to haul in suspects on its “Most Wanted” list. Gottlieb declared that Patel held numerous positions within the Department of Justice before being elevated to the top FBI position and charged with overseeing the revamped ATF.
The real fear among critics is that nefarious actions against Second Amendment rights will be dragged out into the light of day. That much is obvious.
