Forces aligned against gun rights in Virginia are gathering momentum for an all-out assault on the Second Amendment in 2025, and advocates for gun owners have to be ready.
The state Senate is the epicenter of the crusade against the right to keep and bear arms, and last week saw a flourish of bills introduced to erode these freedoms. The good news is that Gov. Glenn Younkin (R), along with the House, are apparent roadblocks to the anti-gun agenda.
Of course, this does not stop these misguided lawmakers from trying.
Their centerpiece is yet another push to ban so-called “assault weapons,” which are in common use by everyday Virginians for everything from sport shooting to self-defense. Opponents of these firearms do not like the way they look and attempt to smear them as “weapons of war.”
The Senate took up this mantle three previous times only to see it crushed when it reached the House. One would think that repeated failure would serve as a deterrent, but it does not.
Anti-gunners added a measure to prohibit the purchase of semi-automatic weapons by young adults 18-20 years of age. There are telling exceptions carved out for military or law enforcement members, but what does this clearly illustrate?
If responsible young adults can be trusted to protect law-abiding citizens and even the nation, should they not be afforded full Second Amendment rights as part of “the people?”
They may marry, vote, enter into contracts, and make numerous other vital decisions, but somehow, they are not full-fledged adult citizens?
Also on lawmakers’ agenda is the Virginia government mandating how firearms may be stored in a person’s home. These controversial rules are such that following them likely removes any realistic chance for armed self-defense if confronted by a surprise attack.
Enforcement generally comes only after a violent encounter.
Gun control proponents are bent on keeping firearms out of hospitals with mental health services, even for concealed carry permit holders. This is a solution looking for a problem.
Anti-gunners proposed a ban on so-called “ghost guns,” which would include prohibiting hobbyists and craftsmen from enjoying a tradition that dates to before the Founding Era.
Never mind that the overwhelming majority of violent criminals get guns the old-fashioned way—they steal them.
Which brings gun rights opponents to their next misguided measure.
If the Senate cabal gets its way, upstanding Virginians will lose their right to keep a weapon in their vehicle for self-defense unless they are a concealed carry permit holder. The absurd claim is that this will somehow end gun theft.
If the new law passed, it would be illegal to store a gun in a locked console or storage box within a vehicle. In other words, the weapon must be kept out in the open rather than secured.
This means the firearm would be an easy target for criminals, which is precisely what proponents claim to be fighting.
Then there’s the ubiquitous waiting period, which is apparently on page one of the anti-Second Amendment playbook. No one is forced to cool their heels before exercising freedom of speech or religion, but good people are required to make multiple trips to a firearm dealer to consummate a single purchase.
The terrified individual under threat of domestic violence may not have five days to wait before becoming a victim is a reality. The right to keep and bear arms means this person must be able to acquire a weapon when needed for self-defense, or that right is virtually meaningless.
Sport shooting and hunting are wonderful American traditions, but they pale in importance compared to a person’s need for immediate protection from a violent threat.
With a governor ready to wield his veto pen, these measures are likely nothing more than embarrassing political posturing. Elections do in fact have consequences, and Virginia gun owners are lucky to have chosen well in most races.
