Parents of Arkansas public school students have a welcome addition to the state’s curriculum to look forward to. After approval in the state Senate and House, Act 229 mandates that all young people in the education system receive age-appropriate weapons safety lessons.

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) signed the measure into law last week.

The Department of Education and the Game and Fish Commission will jointly produce these critical lessons. Committee members will also decide at what age training in these life skills will begin.

Rep. Scott Richardson (R) explained that the impetus for safety training came from everyday conversations with neighbors.

“All of our children play together and invade whatever home happens to be the play of the day,” Richardson explained. “And in that process, they may go into a neighbor’s home and discover that unsecured firearm, and how would they react?”

The lawmaker touted the program as a way to strip the “unknown factor” from firearms. “Let’s make sure we portray it as what it really is, that it is a firearm, that it should not be handled by a child, and make sure they know how to appropriately respond by going and alerting an adult that that situation exists.”

The language of HB 1117 mandates action to “protect Arkansas children from the accidental discharge of firearms by providing age-appropriate firearm education and instructions.”

Students will engage in instruction ranging from online videos to possibly traveling off campus for approved firearm safety instruction that may include live fire.

Parents, of course, must consent to such training through prior written approval.

Game and Fishing Commission spokesman Trey Reid noted that the state’s well-established hunter safety program will serve as a guide for the school training.

“We’ve had hunter education in Arkansas for, oh, 45 years, probably now it’s been mandatory,” Reid said. “It’s mandatory for anybody born after 1968, you have to have it in order to get a hunting license.”

Gun safety training will begin in the coming fall term.
