It is all too common for disturbed drivers to act out aggressively against others they believe wronged them on the nation’s highways. But shouted curses and middle fingers may swiftly transform into actual acts of violence, and for this, the good citizens must be prepared.

A Maryland motorcycle rider was ready Thursday night when he unexpectedly was confronted by a raging driver. The man investigators believe to be the aggressive party was identified as 51-year-old Scott David Guhse.

According to accounts of the fatal incident, Guhse pulled up alongside the motorcyclist and drove erratically while shouting at him. He then forced the rider to pull off the road.

With both now parked beside the Glen Burnie highway, the suspect reportedly charged the 22-year-old motorcyclist with a hammer. That was a poor choice.

The younger man, only identified as a concealed carry permit holder, drew his weapon and fired.

Anne Arundel County Police responded to the call at approximately 8:20 p.m. When they arrived, they found Guhse collapsed on the road, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, the young motorcyclist stayed and told officers that he fired in self-defense as he was being charged. He said the suspect began targeting him some distance away and drove erratically behind him before forcing his motorcycle off the road.

No charges were initially reported, and investigators asked eyewitnesses to step forward with any helpful information. Without evidence to counter the motorcyclist’s description of events, the fatal encounter appears to be a cut-and-dried case of self-defense.

It is the height of foolishness to force another driver off the road and then attack them with a hammer. Last week, a Maryland driver apparently paid the ultimate price to learn this valuable lesson.
