Florida voters overwhelmingly approved Amendment 2 on Election Day. This measure will protect the fundamental right to enjoy hunting and fishing for generations to come.
The proposal was supported by a solid 67% of Sunshine State voters, enough to far surpass the 60% threshold to enshrine it in the Florida Constitution. Conservationists and sporting enthusiasts hailed Amendment 2’s success in establishing the sanctity of these fine American traditions.
Luke Hilgemann is the executive director of the International Order of T. Roosevelt and T. Roosevelt Action, carrying the noted conservationist’s legacy forward.
He celebrated the measure’s passage in a statement after the results were announced.
“Florida voters sent a message that they won’t stand for attacks against our sporting heritage,” Hilgemann declared. “States across the nation can now look to Florida’s success as a blueprint for advocacy and action, uniting sportsmen and women to push back against restrictive regulations and safeguard our outdoor way of life.”
Opponents unsuccessfully claimed that Florida’s waters would be opened to foreign fishing interests and that protections for fish stocks would be eroded. Voters soundly rejected this position to support Amendment 2.
The Sierra Club and Save the Manatee Club supported NoTo2.Org, the group opposed to the measure.
Amendment 2’s wording was quite specific in its protection of sporting traditions. The measure read: “Fishing, hunting, and the taking of fish and wildlife, including by the use of traditional methods, shall be preserved forever as a public right and preferred means of responsibly managing and controlling fish and wildlife.”
The amendment reserved the right of the state’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to regulate hunting and fishing as necessary. This was more than enough to assure the sporting community that their time-honored traditions would be safeguarded for their descendants.
Indeed, hunting and fishing are proven time and again to be the most effective ways of managing the wildlife population. Responsible sportsmen and women and the best friends to the American outdoors.
