A mother is the wrong person to confront with a threat involving her children. This is true up and down nature’s food chain, and the warning certainly applies to one young woman in Decatur, Illinois.

Local media reported that the mother and her two small children were targeted by three home invaders, two males and one female. The terrifying break-in unfolded at about 4 a.m. on Monday.

Two of the alleged intruders were armed, and the trio threatened the young woman as she held her five-month-old baby on her hip and shielded her two-year-old.

This was nearly a grave mistake.

The heroic woman told her attackers that she was armed and that they needed to leave her property. If they had done so, they would likely have gotten away with the crime already committed. But they didn’t.

Two of the suspects allegedly opened fire on the woman, who fiercely defended her offspring by firing her own shots in self-defense. This came as she continued to hold the baby at her side.

One of the suspects, later identified as 24-year-old Deonte A. Stone, was injured by the mother’s defensive action. Unfortunately, she was also wounded by two bullets, though the damage was not life-threatening.

The baby and two-year-old escaped the harrowing experience unharmed.

The intruders fled for their lives, and the woman’s boyfriend arrived shortly and transported her to the hospital. The suspects made off with a PlayStation 5 Pro.

Officers were later called to a residence over the report of a man being shot. They found Stone, who was taken to the hospital and interviewed by a detective.

The suspect admitted that he participated in the alleged robbery along with a 16-year-old youth. The two planned to split the proceeds.

The young mother warned the invaders that she was armed, and most would agree that they brought to themselves anything that happened after that. The three should pay a steep price for what ultimately was only the theft of a game console.
