July 4th means a lot of things to different people, but the overriding cause for celebration is the freedom to live our lives as Americans in the way we see fit. Good people respect each other and follow the rule of law to ensure peace and prosperity.

In Louisiana this year, Independence Day has an even more special meaning for gun owners. Law-abiding citizens are now free to exercise their Second Amendment rights to concealed carry without needing to beseech the state government for a permission slip.

Back on March 5, Gov. Jeff Landry (R) signed SB 1 into law, restoring this right to residents of the state 18 and older.

The governor proclaimed, “Today, we join 27 other states in passing constitutional carry. I promised the folks of Louisiana that I would champion constitutional carry into law, and within two months, I have honored that commitment. It is fundamentally clear — law-abiding citizens should never have to seek government permission to safeguard themselves and their families. Today, we have secured an incredible victory for liberty in Louisiana.”

Louisiana had long permitted open carry of weapons, and the new concealed carry law means state statutes align with all others along its borders.

The bill’s sponsor, state Sen. Blake Miguez (R), deemed Independence Day an important symbolic launch to the new freedom. The lawmaker posted his celebration of the widely popular legislation on X.

“This Fourth of July, we celebrate not only the birth of our great nation but also a pivotal moment in Louisiana’s history — the enactment of constitutional carry legislation. Louisiana now proudly joins the ranks of states that recognize the fundamental right to carry a firearm without the need for government-issued permission.”

There are now 29 states that respect their citizens’ right to constitutional carry.
