The narrative has become quite familiar. A violent criminal believes that an intended victim will cower in the corner and submit to their every demand. But when the attack begins, the victim refuses to cooperate.

The target is armed and prepared. Instead of becoming yet another statistic, the citizen courageously defends themselves, their loved ones, and their property against someone who has no respect for other persons or the law.

That is exactly what happened in the early morning hours on Sunday.

At around 5:30 a.m. at a Terre Haute, Indiana residence on the 200 block of North Fruitridge Ave., an alleged intruder entered the home. At that hour, the suspect undoubtedly did not expect to face resistance and planned for a successful crime with a quick exit.

Unfortunately for the suspect, the homeowner was prepared.

The Terre Haute Police Department identified the suspect as 30-year-old Michael Bell, and they report that he died at the scene after being shot during the intrusion.

The call to Vigo County Central Dispatch mentioned a second suspect, and local media reported that he “fled on foot.” Officers later found him “hiding in a neighboring backyard.”

The Police Department posted on Facebook Monday morning that “the person who was allegedly with Bell during the incident was released Sunday without charges being filed at this time.”

Police also report that no charges are being filed against the homeowner who defended themselves. Authorities called it an active investigation but said there is no ongoing danger to the surrounding community.

If there’s one thing that is certain, it’s that Americans are fed up with the wave of violent crime sweeping the nation. Laws are being amended to soften punishments on criminals, and prosecutors continually look for ways to make life easier for the suspects instead of their victims.

At the same time, Second Amendment freedoms essential for self-defense are being whittled away daily. Self-serving politicians and well-funded organizations search for ways around the clear intentions of the Bill of Rights in order to deny the ability for law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.

And the compliant mainstream media chooses to ignore the obvious fact that it is the violent criminal and not the instrument that is guilty of terrorizing peaceful citizens. Instead, they religiously trumpet the message that rights must be stripped from the people.

Enough is enough.

As this Indiana homeowner and countless others have demonstrated, the best defense against violent acts is to be legally armed and ready to resist criminal attacks. Of course, law-abiding citizens support the police, but unfortunately the police cannot be all places at once to protect everyone from harm.

Too many times, they arrive only to take down names and collect evidence.

That tragic result may be avoided, however, if a person chooses to take charge of their personal safety. By exercising their Second Amendment rights in a legal and responsible way, the people can revolt against the criminal element that counts on them being unarmed and defenseless.

But in states across the country, there is a concerted effort to undermine precious liberties and prevent citizens from choosing to not be victims. Political leaders look to build voting blocks and rally the uninformed behind actions that do nothing to fight violent crime.

Anti-gun measures sound attractive to certain segments of the population, but they do not address the core issue of criminality. After all, criminals do not give up their weapons simply because the law changes. Instead, it’s the law-abiding public who is forced to hand over their means of protecting those they care about.

It is the duty of every freedom-loving American to stand up and defend our hard-won liberties. Among those that need protection, especially today, is the right to keep and bear arms.
