A Michigan man spent nine grueling months behind bars waiting for his trial on murder charges in the July 2024 death of another man. Eric M. Wills II argued that he acted in self-defense, but the prosecution wanted to put him behind bars—possibly for the rest of his life.

That threat is over as a jury exonerated Wills, and today he is a free man.

Wills reportedly was sitting in a car with his girlfriend outside her home in Saginaw when an SUV pulled up alongside them. The driver, 31-year-old Equayvis S. “Quay” Moten, exited the vehicle and threatened Wills with a fight.

Unfortunately for Moten, his intended victim was armed. A physical altercation ensued before Wills fired his weapon, striking his attacker, who then somehow fell into his car.

Wills dragged Moten from the Dodge and quickly drove away, while the woman went into her home and called emergency services.

Moten succumbed to multiple gunshot injuries at the hospital overnight.

Police arrested Wills, and he was charged with murder. His defense attorney, Alan Crawford, presented evidence to the jury that the deceased had marijuana in his system and a blood-alcohol level of 0.18, well beyond the legal limit for intoxication.

The jury also heard that Moten stalked his ex after their breakup.

The prosecution contended that Wills did not fear for his life when he was attacked, but the jury disagreed. The unanimous verdict means that the shooting is vindicated and the shooter is now a free man.

He faces unrelated drug charges for a small amount of an illegal substance but was released on bond.

After the verdict was announced, Crawford said the jury reached the correct conclusion. “It was the right decision. We knew all along that it was a valid case of self-defense. There was no clearer scenario. It shouldn’t have been charged, and I stand by that. The jury saw this and were able to come to a quick conclusion.”

Wills’ mother, Nakeyia Wills, traveled from Texas to be at her son’s side as he faced the challenge of a lifetime. When his unrelated charges are resolved, she told reporters that she plans to move him south to be nearer to her.
