Road rage incidents, despite seemingly becoming even more common, are notoriously dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. Most are easily avoided simply by ignoring the outraged driver and giving more space between vehicles, but sometimes the civilized approach fails.
Such was apparently the case in Carroll County, Kentucky, last Saturday. Investigators believe the deadly encounter on I-71 in the early evening hours was likely a case of self-defense.
The Kentucky State Patrol (KSP) issued a news release explaining that law enforcement received a call from 63-year-old Daniel Shouse of Carrollton saying another driver brandished a firearm on the interstate.
Shots were fired, though it is not certain if both drivers pulled their triggers, and Shouse was struck. He later died from his wounds.
KSP officials explained that the second driver who apparently fired the fatal shot remained on the scene. Investigators now believe that Shouse produced his weapon first and was then shot.
A state trooper who probed the fatal incident, Chad Johnson, said that charges are not being filed at this point. It was determined that Shouse’s vehicle passed the other driver, and he is believed to have produced a weapon at that point.
He further noted the surviving driver stayed at the location. “He was on the scene when law enforcement got there. Law enforcement has been able to interview him and talk to him, and he’s been cooperative the entire time.”
Again, road rage incidents that spring to life without warning are particularly dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. Escalation without the immediate need for self-defense may result in legal troubles and worse.
Avoiding obnoxious and inconsiderate drivers may be as simple as not engaging in eye contact, verbal interactions or hand gestures, which could save a life and head off serious legal ramifications.
