New legislative attempts to brush aside the Second Amendment and ban standard weapons in the U.S. are as regular as the sunrise. The latest infringement comes from Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA).
Its sights are set on a wide array of popular sporting rifles that are regularly utilized for everything from hunting and friendly competitions to self-defense.
And it’s not just these semiautomatic weapons that are targeted by McBath’s proposal. Many semiautomatic shotguns for everyday use in hunting could also fall under the reach of this bill, as they regularly use gas to operate.
McBath introduced the Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion Act (GOSAFE) in the lower chamber after a similar bill proposed in the Senate late last year failed to gain traction.
The NRA blasted the Senate version for being so poorly worded that, even with exclusions, it could ban all semi-automatic handguns. That was far beyond what proponents claimed to seek, though they would undoubtedly be pleased with that result.
This new House version goes directly after any weapons, including rifles, shotguns and pistols, that utilize gas during reloading.
McBath’s bill proceeds to the House Judiciary Committee for consideration, though the likelihood of passage out of the body is even more uncertain than in the Senate.
McBath expressed her gratitude to Senate lawmakers for their earlier proposal, calling it a “common-sense piece of legislation.”
Angela Ferrel-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action, echoed her words. She called the GOSAFE Act “a common-sense bill that will keep our communities safe while respecting the Second Amendment.
Of course, any arbitrary restrictions on gun rights are termed “common sense” by opponents, and there is a glaring lack of respect for the Bill of Rights by the anti-weapon lobby. That comes as a surprise to precisely no one.
They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
