To be clear, the goal of virtually every anti-gunner is to eradicate gun rights and confiscate the hundreds of millions of weapons in circulation in the U.S.
To achieve this, they would first need to know who owns these weapons and where they are located.
Is it any surprise that these opponents of gun rights want to establish a federal gun registry?
With this in mind, a pair of lawmakers introduced the No Retaining Every Gun In a System that Restricts Your (REGISTRY) Rights Act last week. This wordy title describes legislation preventing Washington from creating this listing of firearms and their owners.
Sen. Jim Risch (R-ID) and Rep. Michael Cloud (R-TX) joined eight senators and 47 members of the House of Representatives in opposing such an act.
The specifics of the No REGISTRY Rights Act are clear.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) would be forced to delete every existing firearm transaction record.
Federal firearm licensees (FFLs) would be permitted to destroy transaction records when they cease operations.
And the ATF would be prohibited from establishing or maintaining a firearms registry going forward.
Current federal statutes require licensed firearm dealers to turn over their transaction records to the ATF when they go out of business. The controversial agency keeps this data in its Out-of-Business Records Imaging System.
This monstrosity now holds almost one billion records of firearm transactions made by law-abiding U.S. citizens.
A White House rule published in 2022 mandated that FFLs keep records of these firearm transactions indefinitely. This marked a radical shift from the previous policy, which required maintaining the records for 20 years.
The so-called “time-to-crime” period, the span between the sale of a weapon and its use in the commission of a crime, seldom spans more than two decades.
Risch blasted federal encroachment onto Second Amendment rights in the press release accompanying the announcement.
“The ATF’s excessive overreach has gone unchecked for too long. Idaho’s law-abiding gun owners should not be subject to an already illegal federal firearms registry,” Risch declared. “The Second Amendment is not conditional to a list of guns in circulation and their owners. All law-abiding Americans have the undeniable right to keep and bear arms. My No REGISTRY Rights Act will safeguard this essential liberty for generations to come.”
His powerful statement was echoed by Cloud, who criticized the idea of a federal inventory of weapons.
“Americans’ right to keep and bear arms is not subject to a government inventory. The Second Amendment is a cornerstone of individual liberty, and no administration—Republican or Democrat—should have the ability to compile a list of law-abiding gun owners,” the representative asserted.
Cloud further criticized attempts by anti-gunners to create a “backdoor” federal firearms registry.
Every American who values the right to keep and bear arms should applaud this noble proposal. It would reinforce the existing ban on creating such a registry and further ensure that Second Amendment rights are protected now and for future generations.
Opponents of gun rights never tire of piling on new restrictions and obstacles to purchasing and possessing a weapon.
The proposals many times are just window dressing for the ultimate and more sinister goal—the door-to-door confiscation of weapons and disarming of Americans.
This will only come about if authorities know which households possess weapons, and that will result from a federal firearm registry. Risch and Cloud are correct and should be commended for standing up for constitutional rights.
The chances of the No REGISTRY Rights Act passing through Congress and heading to the White House are considerable, and it cannot become law a moment too soon. Gun rights supporters should closely monitor this proposal’s progress.
