Second Amendment rights prevailed in a threatened legal showdown between Gun Owners of America (GOA) and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette (UL).

Louisiana law dictates that any area within a 1000-yard radius of a school is a “safe school zone,” meaning that firearms are prohibited.

However, some local officials pushed back since constitutional carry was enacted over the summer to end the need for government permission to possess a weapon outside of the home. New Orleans lawmakers, for example, attempted to declare a bogus vocational school at a police precinct to erase carry rights in much of the tourist district.

UL officials then claimed that the Lafayette Science Museum and a pair of hotels in the downtown area are “schools.” If this flimflam were allowed to proceed, lawful gun owners would no longer be able to protect themselves with a firearm in much of the city.

However, state officials emphatically informed the university that such actions violated the law, and the GOA sent a letter to Lafayette Mayor-President Monique Boulet, along with law enforcement and university officials, last month.

The legal threat led to a quick reversal.

University officials explained in a statement that while state law dictates that they must “post signs identifying firearm-free zones at university campus entrances,” the statute is “ambiguous” in determining what a campus is.

They said they received clarification explaining that these “zones” do not extend past the physical property owned by the institution.

Officials concluded, “The University works to avoid infringing on any constitutional rights while also ensuring the safety and welfare of our students. Therefore, as authorized by state law, the University has replaced “Safe School Zone” signs with “Weapons-Free Facility” signage that precludes firearms within these facilities but does not establish any zones outside them.

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
