Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry (R) drew praise from Second Amendment advocates for his strong stand against giant firms that discriminate against the weapons industry.
The first-term lawmaker signed the Firearm Industry Nondiscrimination (FIND) Act on Tuesday in a significant step toward punishing financial and insurance companies that pick and choose legal businesses to provide services to.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the industry trade association, quickly applauded the governor’s action. Director of Government Relations — State Affairs Darren LaSorte drove the point home that Landry spearheaded the move long before he was elected to the Governor’s Mansion.
“Governor Landry’s leadership in Louisiana was the inspiration behind the FIND Act. While attorney general and serving on the State Bond Commission, he helped deny hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer-funded work” to those who would deny services to the weapons industry.
LaSorte explained that the future governor worked to protect gun manufacturers through statutory means, though the previous officeholder vetoed the first incarnation of the FIND Act.
This new state law requires large banks and financial firms that seek to secure contracts worth $100,000 or more with the state and local governments to ensure that they do business fairly with the gun industry.
If a previous contract is discovered to exist with a company that discriminates against Second Amendment-protected firms, it will be subject to cancellation.
A concerted effort sprang up in recent years to attempt to strangle the gun industry out of existence through the denial of basic and essential financial and insurance services. Now, states that respect gun rights are fighting back, and Louisiana is the latest to require that all entities it conducts business with operate fairly.
They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
