The standard “dog bites man” self-defense stories involve law-abiding citizens fending off violent criminals who attempt to break into their homes, mug them, steal their cars, or other shenanigans.
Then there’s the “man bites dog” variety.
This episode unfolded in Garland, Maine, in mid-January when a homeowner was attacked by an assailant operating a stolen front-end loader.
The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office reported that 37-year-old Michael Thompson of Corinna is believed to have stolen the heavy machinery from a nearby gravel pit. The suspect then allegedly crashed into multiple vehicles in the home’s driveway before turning his attention to the structure itself.
To make matters worse, it was 5:30 a.m. Indeed, there is no good time to be attacked by heavy construction machinery, but it was even worse to be awakened by such a bizarre and potentially deadly situation.
The understandably startled residents raced out of the home, and one had the presence of mind to grab a loaded firearm. Several shots were fired at the suspect, who quickly backed the heavy machinery out of the driveway and drove it through a nearby field and into the woods.
Less than an hour later, authorities were called with a report that Thompson was driving the stolen front-end loader down a local road. He was quickly found and taken into custody, and responding officers discovered that he had been shot.
Thompson was taken to a local hospital for treatment and then arrested and transported to the Penobscot County Jail.
There are many missing details, such as why the front-end loader was stolen and if the house was specifically targeted, but law enforcement has not provided further explanation. Authorities did not list specific charges other than to say that several are pending.
Still, it is essential to realize just how deadly this bizarre confrontation could have become without an armed citizen ready to defend themselves and others.
Once again, the Second Amendment came shining through to protect the innocent.
