All too often, the source of a violent threat is someone known to the intended victim. And while the existence of a previous relationship is a complication, it does not diminish the potential harm to the target.

An Arizona man last weekend found himself in a volatile situation that apparently called for an armed response. Tucson police were called to a residence at about 1:30 p.m. on Saturday on the report of a break-in and shooting.

The suspect was the man’s ex-girlfriend, identified as 23-year-old Nazhoni Nunez. It is unclear if she was armed.

The resident called 911 and told the dispatcher he had been in a relationship with the female. Investigators believe she forced her way into his apartment for reasons unknown, and a confrontation ensued.

Authorities reported that the man fired his weapon, fatally wounding Nunez. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

No arrest has been made, and no charges have been immediately filed as of the last report. Tucson police noted that the investigation is ongoing, and their findings will be handed over to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for possible action.

Under Arizona law, citizens have the right to defend themselves in their homes. The specifics of the break-in will be critical, however, when determining if the use of deadly force was justified.

The Second Amendment guarantees law-abiding citizens the right to keep and bear arms, and an armed response is often necessary to protect life and property.

It is essential for all gun owners to discharge their weapons only when confronted by a potentially deadly threat. This scenario is played out far too often in 2025, and the decision to resort to lethal force should not be taken lightly.

However, if a person breaks into another individual’s residence and threatens them, that is the chance they take.
