If you follow the gun community long enough, at some point you’re going to be told that you have to dry fire in order to become a better shooter… and it’s true.
The problem is, dry firing is annoying as hell and it’s boring.
Anyone who tells you that dry firing is fun is either a psychopath or a competition shooter.
The problem with dry firing is you have to manually reset your trigger after each pull and there’s no feed back.

That said, for years there have been companies who have made products to make dry fire practice not only more effect but enjoyable. Today, one of those companies is Mantis.
Mantis makes a device called the Blackbeard. In short The Blackbeard is a training system that allows you to dry fire your AR-15 with a functional trigger. Now here’s the long part.
The mantis comes with what is essentially a fake bolt carrier group, fake magazine, a bunch of targets, a phone tripod, and an app.
If I’m honest, in the time I’ve spent with this product, If it only came with the fake bolt and fake magazine, I’d be just fine and here’s why.
The way the bolt works is you take out your real bolt and replace with the fake red fake bolt supplied by mantis. Then you take the fake red magazine and then seat it in the magazine well.
When you do this you’ll hear what i can only describe as what I believe a laser gun would sound like when you turned it on and it was ready to fire.

Ironically, it essentially turns your AR15 into a laser gun.
At this point your AR-15 functions like normal except instead of shooting bullets it shoots a green laser every time you pull the trigger and once you pull the trigger it automatically resets so you can pull the trigger over and over and over again until the battery in the fake magazine dies.
But once it dies all you have to do is use a micro usb to charge it and you’re good to go.
What this allows you to do is dry fire in a way that actually makes dry fire practice fun and extremely effective. You can literally set up targets around your house and practice what you’d do if you had to deal with a home invasion.
Or maybe you just want to work on tactics you learned about how to clear a building or a room.
Now, I’d be lying if I said my trigger felt exactly how it does when I’m actually shooting rounds.
It’s very close, but it actually feels a tad bit heavier, which if you ask isn’t exactly a bad thing.
In case you’re wondering, yes, you can zero the laser to your optic using the the two adjustment holes on the bolt and to make this process easier, you can set the laser to constant on by flipping the switch on the bolt down.

I know it’s seems overly simplistic, but you really don’t understand how cool this part of the system is until you actually use it.
Crazy thing is it’s get’s better. Kind of. You see, along with the fake bolt carrier group and fake magazine the Blackbeard came with an app that I have a love hate relationship with.
When you create an account on the app, you’re greeted with a list of different shooting drills and courses that coincide with the stack of targets that come in the system.
Here’s how it works. You hang up one or multiple targets. Then you mount your phone to tripod and open the app. From there you pick which drill you want to do.
Then you take your phone camera and center the target or targets on your phones camera until the app use the QR code to identify the targets. Once the app identifies the target you can start your drill.
Here is where the hate and hate i have for the app comes in. I love the fact that the app will tell you exactly where each shot lands on the target.
I love the sound of the gun going off and the shell hitting the floor that the app makes whenever you pull the trigger and it registers where the laser hit.
However, the app can be annoyingly finicky about where you place the target. It doesn’t like dark backgrounds.

Sometimes it picks up the targets that just fine and other times it acts like it doesn’t know what it was designed to do.
However, when it did work, it was fun and an effective training aid, but it use was limited to what target the phone could see through the camera.
That said, i can see an ambitious soul would use multiple phones and/or iPads to set up targets at different locations to practice not only dry fire but clearing tactics and see exactly where their shots land through the app.
There are a lot of different drills can do through the app as well but some of them are behind a pay wall.
I don’t know exactly how I feel about a good number of the drills being behind a pay wall, but i will say, that to me, the ability to have a functioning trigger for a dry fire practice makes this entire system worth it.
Just setting up targets in different location and practicing my clearing techniques, I was able to pick up on my bad habits as far as trigger manipulation and the way I held and moved with my gun while working the trigger.
It also helped me develop a more natural feel for height over bore. I genuinely enjoyed using the system.
I still don’t know how i feel about some of drills in the app being behind a pay wall, but i can say when the app worked. I.e. when i put the targets on a light colored wall, the drills were at a minimum entertaining and at best a very effective dry fire training tool for your AR-15.
