On the heels of the White House’s so-called Office of Gun Violence Prevention, Maryland on Thursday became the first state to follow the administration’s lead. Gov. Wes Moore (D) signed the bill into law creating a state agency to coordinate and intensify gun control efforts.
Moore held a signing ceremony to applaud Maryland for being the first in the nation to heed the call. Supporters claimed the new creation would assist in coordinating national and state efforts to rein in gun violence.
In 2023, President Joe Biden assigned oversight to the newest federal gun control effort to Vice President Kamala Harris. At the same time, the plea went out to states to follow suit with their own offices.
It is noteworthy that there was not a call from Washington to incarcerate violent criminals and end the revolving door system of justice.
Instead, the target continues to be those who obey the law and comply with edicts, whether they align with the Second Amendment and the U.S. Supreme Court or do not.
Two other legislative curbs on gun rights were also signed by Moore. One, House Bill 947, added to the growing roster of states attempting to circumvent clear federal law banning frivolous lawsuits intent on crippling the weapons industry.
Supporters said allowing litigation against the constitutionally protected sector would “hold bad actors in the firearm industry accountable.”
However, the industry is safeguarded from malicious and potentially destructive litigation by the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA). This federal law was enacted more than two decades ago to shield manufacturers and distributors from an all-out effort by anti-Second Amendment forces to destroy them.
The other proposal signed by Moore, House Bill 810, banned what the anti-gun lobby labels as “Glock switches.” These auto sears are a common accessory popular with the shooting public that are being heavily targeted by gun control advocates.
