U.S. Supreme Court actions—and inactions—have consequences for law-abiding Americans, and one recent inaction emboldened a pair of Maryland lawmakers to go all-out against the Second Amendment.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) reintroduced their proposal to push for expanded state and local laws requiring a handgun permit. The Handgun Permit to Purchase Act is just the latest egregious example of the extent to which anti-gunners are willing to go to block the right to keep and bear arms.
And recent high court actions spurred this latest attack on gun rights.
The nine justices recently declined to hear a challenge to Maryland’s scheme to force people to qualify through a permitting process to acquire a handgun legally.
This gave the lawmakers the green light to rehash the already-defeated Handgun Permit to Purchase Act. And this time, they hope to successfully impose Maryland’s unconstitutional standards on the rest of the nation.
Hollen and Raskin are joined by three co-sponsors: Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-CT).
The legislation was first introduced in Congress in 2015.
Van Hollen, who spearheaded the initial failed attempt, mistakenly believes that requiring a permit to exercise a cherished constitutional right will somehow make Americans safer.
The sad truth is that it puts more people in situations where they cannot defend themselves. Every legal and financial barrier that anti-Second Amendment forces can erect only further separates law-abiding citizens from their fundamental right to protect themselves.
The senator mistakenly used the fact that states demand a license to drive a car as an excuse to impose more gun control.
There is an overwhelming difference.
Driving a car is not a right enshrined in the Constitution, but the freedom to keep and bear arms is. Nothing in this nation’s history or tradition suggests Americans should receive a permit before exercising their fundamental freedoms.
