Massachusetts citizens are flocking to gun stores ahead of the implementation of a controversial new law that will significantly impede their free exercise of Second Amendment rights.

Bearing Arms reported that Toby Leary of Cape Gun Works is experiencing an unprecedented run on his business. Astute gun rights supporters are well aware of the potential damage due to actions by state lawmakers, even though the implementation is murky at best.

Leary told the outlet that hundreds of customers stream through his doors daily to grab as much inventory as possible before it becomes virtually impossible to secure.

Massachusetts previously officially defined a “firearm” as a handgun, but that was swept aside. Now every weapon meets the state requirements to be a “firearm,” which subjects all guns to stringent and oppressive demands.

In other words, the state is bringing the hammer down on every lawful gun owner, and thus the rush to beat the implementation of the new law. The official start date for the controversial statute is murky, leaving licensed dealers to clear out old inventory as they wait for the restrictions to kick in.

Leaders including Gov. Maura Healey (D) championed the change by claiming that it was “an act modernizing firearm laws.” The truth is that it was just another state action intended to come as close to a gun ban as legally possible.

Interestingly, while Massachusetts is certainly not considered one of the states at the forefront of Second Amendment advocacy, gun ownership soared in recent years.

A 2022 study showed that gun sales doubled in the previous decade and spiked an impressive 57% from just 2019.

Further, handgun purchases accounted for 64% of all weapons transactions from 2020 to 2021. This figure showed that Massachusetts residents acquired weapons largely for self-defense purposes.

At least one lawsuit has already been filed against the state’s latest gun control overreach, and more are certain to follow. As for now, the good citizens are racing the clock to stock up on their weapons before the new restrictions take effect.

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
