A surprise endorsement for popularizing the use of silencers came from a major medical association last week.
The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) boasts over 13,000 members. The respected group published a position statement supporting suppressor use to protect shooters’ hearing.
Three individual studies were cited in AAO-HNS reaching its conclusion.
Its statement described sound suppressors as “mechanical devices attached to the barrel of a firearm designed to reduce harmful impulse noise of firearms at its source.”
The position statement continued. “CDC research has shown that ‘The only potentially effective noise control method to reduce [shooters’] noise exposure from gunfire is through the use of noise suppressors that can be attached to the end of a gun barrel.’ Suppressors reduce muzzle blast noise by up to 30 dB.”
The group supports combining suppressors with hearing protection, such as earplugs or earmuffs. If conventional accessories such as these are used in conjunction with noise suppressors, the shooter’s benefit should be immense.
Unfortunately for the shooting public, suppressors fall under the same federal regulations as machine guns. The good news is that there appears to be at least some progress on these handy devices within the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
The ATF now accepts suppressor registration online, and the process is streamlined compared to years past.
The Reload interviewed Dr. Timothy Wheeler, an AAO-HNS life fellow and the founder of Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership. He told the gun advocacy group that the national organization is not advocating for specific new laws or policies but is expressing its “scientifically based observation.”
Wheeler added that while the group’s position is not political, it does say something about those opposed to noise suppressors. In effect, they are against protecting shooters from hearing loss. “That’s the implication, and that’s the truth.”
